About Professor Animalia:
Using circus-style sideshow banners, the artists combine whimsical, joyful folk art with the serious subject of extinction. Instead of trapeze artists or sword swallowers, the banners feature “struggling” species like the Indiana bat, the black rhino and the monarch butterfly. Over a dozen banners will each feature a different endangered species.
This concept reflects a culmination of Bloomington-based artists Joe and Bess Lee’s past experiences, both professionally and personally: Joe’s work with actual circuses and as an illustrator and Bess’s career as a public school art teacher and painter. Animalia is a reflection of these experiences as individual artists and concerned citizens. Their intent is to create art and community to highlight the fragility of the planet and its species.
